Longevity Tips by Dr.Varalakshmi
The word Ayu in Ayurveda means lifespan, the concept of longevity is fundamentally ingrained in ayurvedic principles.
Ayurvedic concepts like dinacharya, ritucharya highlight the importance of qualitative life and how one could prolong life through disciplined and personalised rituals.

Ayurveda also dedicated an entire branch to enhancing life span called Rasayana. Rasayana practices are holistic techniques aimed at rejuvenating the body’s tissues and maintaining balance in the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These practices are believed to slow the ageing process, enhance immunity, and increase overall vitality.
Before exploring the concept of rasayana, let's consider why we age.
Aging progresses more rapidly in today's world.
Polluted Food, Water & Air - It's evident that our soil, air, and food are significantly contaminated with environmental toxins and microplastics. A large majority, 90%, of the patients I encounter suffer from nutritional deficiencies despite making conscious choices. Estrogen is inadvertently introduced into our bodies through dairy and meat products, leading to issues like fibroids, cysts, and early menopause in women.
Sedentary Lifestyle - In the UK, 63.7% of people meet their weekly exercise requirements, leaving 32.3% not moving enough. The situation in the US is even worse than in the UK. As modern beings accustomed to comfort, we don't engage in as much physical activity as our ancestors did. Although we may be more advanced than our prehistoric predecessors, we fall short in terms of movement.
Ultra-Processed & Nutrient-Lacking Food - The reality is that the quality of nourishment in the food we consume is decreasing daily. While there is optimism in regenerative and organic farming practices, these methods won't quickly reverse the effects of centuries of mass production and extreme food hybridization.

Signs of Ageing
Your body starts showing signs of ageing as early as 35 and it continues to increase at rapid pace once you hit 45 till 60.
Skin : Wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and pigmentation occur when there is an imbalance in the body's nourishment processes.
Bone :Joint pain and loss of bone density result from weakened tissue regeneration capabilities.
General :Fatigue, weakened immunity, and cognitive decline are signs of accelerated aging.
Here's how you can live long & look young with the help of Ayurveda!

Limit the exposure - While there is no way we can completely avoid the exposure to environmental and endocrine disruptors unless we live off the grid. We can limit our exposure through choosing organic produce, clean personal care & household items.
Enhance your OJAS - OJAS is like the savings bank account where your body stores resilience and strength that you need to tackle the everyday stress to inflammation. People with good OJAs can thrive even in a world where food is suboptimal.
Detoxification - Ayurveda recommends seasonal cleansing to aid in the elimination of build up toxins inside our body. One with optimal digestion and one who exercises every day and eats healthy per season & per prakruthi doesn't require such detoxifications either.
Incorporate Rasayanas - These are herbs, diet & practices that build qualitative tissues that result in longevity. Include such herbs like aswagandha, amla, Shatavari & gotukola to achieve vitality.

1. Ashwagandha: Often called the "Indian Ginseng," ashwagandha is widely known for its stress-relieving properties. It's an adaptogen, which means it helps your body cope with stress and anxiety. This horse smelling root is also used to boost men's libido and overall vitality.
2. Amla: Also known as Indian gooseberry, amla is packed with vitamin C and other antioxidants, making it excellent for boosting the immune system and promoting healthy skin and hair. It’s known to help with heart health by improving cholesterol levels, and it may also help manage blood sugar.
3. Shatavari: This herb is particularly famous in Ayurvedic medicine for supporting female reproductive health. It’s used to balance hormones, increase fertility, and ease menstrual and menopausal symptoms. Shatavari is also considered an adaptogen, helping the body cope with physical and emotional stress.
4. Gotu Kola: A staple in Ayurvedic medicine, gotu kola is renowned for its ability to improve cognitive function and memory. It enhances circulation, which can aid in healing and potentially help with varicose veins. Also widely used for skin healing & stress relieving properties.
Before taking any herbs, one should consult an ayurvedic doctor/practitioner beforehand to avoid any unwanted side effects.
